The Why and How of Simplicity

Simplicity has been the cornerstone of my practice for a while now.

In large part, becoming a mother required me to get really clear on my priorities and shed virtually everything else.

While that transition is becoming more of a distant memory, the experience itself forever shaped me. Getting clear on what I value and how to apply those values with fewer resources continues to influence how I practice and teach.

As a teacher, I’ve witnessed how this principle extends beyond me. We’ve all had seasons of juggling more than we can handle. When you find yourself there, or simply on a day where the troubles in the world feel too vast, the practice of simplicity appears to be universal.

I’ll offer three qualities to help uncover your version of simplicity…

Clarify
I strongly value feeling connected to my body, so I center practices to encourage that connection. In practical terms, this means I aim to make movement, nourishment, and rest part of my every day. No two days are the same, but having clarity around what matters to me provides a baseline I can return to.

Customize
Through simplicity, we can better honor the individual. What’s simple for you and me will be different. Part of the practice of simplicity is turning inward and paying attention. When in doubt, let play, fun and JOY be your guide.

Cherish
One of the outcomes of simplifying my approach to caring for myself has been a deeper appreciation for my body and the straightforward tools it requires. My version of self care is almost never luxurious or expensive; it’s much more a practice of self respect and personal responsibility so I have the capacity to show up as the parent and partner I want to be. At the end of the day, that’s far more meaningful to me than anything a studio or spa could offer.

I’ll leave you with a simple prompt:
What does caring for self look like for me in its simplest form?
How can I better align my values and routines?
